How to Get Tuition Assignments in Singapore

Where tuition assignments in Singapore actually come from, why some tutors get matched in days while others wait weeks, and how to be first in line.

Every week, families across Singapore submit requests for home tutors: PSLE Maths in Sengkang, O-Level Chemistry in Tampines, JC Economics in Bishan. Those requests become tuition assignments, and they go to whichever suitable tutor responds first. Some tutors get matched within days of signing up. Others wait weeks. The difference is rarely luck.

Where assignments come from

The large majority of assignments flow through tuition agencies, because that is where parents go when they want a tutor quickly. An agency collects the family request, shortlists tutors whose subject, level, area and rate fit, and offers the assignment to them. The first suitable tutor to accept usually gets it.

Freelance channels exist, from word of mouth to online marketplaces, but they ask you to do your own marketing. For a new tutor, an agency pipeline is the fastest route to a first student, as covered in our guide to becoming a home tutor in Singapore.

Why some tutors get matched faster

They respond fast. Assignments are time-sensitive; parents expect a shortlist within a day. Tutors who reply to offers within the hour are consistently the busiest.

Their coverage is wide. Every constraint you add narrows your pool. A tutor open to three neighbourhoods along their MRT line sees several times the assignments of one fixed to a single estate. Requests come from HDB estates and private housing across the whole island, not just central areas.

Their rate matches their profile. You set your own rate, but quoting far above the going band for your experience filters you out of most matches. The current bands: primary $30 to $35, lower secondary $35 to $40, upper secondary $40 to $45, and $50 to $70 for experienced or MOE-trained tutors. Full numbers are in our tutor earnings guide.

Their subjects are in demand. PSLE and O-Level Maths, Science and English generate the most requests, with A-Level Maths, Chemistry and Economics close behind. Tutors covering Additional Maths or IB get matched quickly because supply is thin.

The profile that gets picked

When an agency puts you forward, the parent sees a short profile. Make those lines count:

  • Qualifications and current occupation, specific: "NTU Year 2, Chemical Engineering" beats "undergraduate"
  • Subjects and levels you teach, with your own grades in them
  • Track record if you have one, concrete: "coached a Sec 4 student from C5 to A2 in 8 months"
  • Areas and timings you can do
  • Your hourly rate

Keeping the assignment

Getting matched is half the job; the first month decides the rest. Families in Singapore switch tutors quickly when lessons feel unprepared. Turn up with the school syllabus, set a goal for the term, and send the parent a two-line update after each lesson. Do that and one assignment becomes a referral chain.

Start getting offers

Apply as a tutor with The Learning Zone: submit your profile in a few minutes, get reviewed within 1 to 3 days, and receive assignments that fit the subjects, areas and rate you set. Commission is one-time per assignment (3 lessons or 75 percent of the first month equivalent, whichever is higher), and everything after that is yours.
