Private Tutor Earnings in Singapore 2026: Real Rates

How much do private tutors earn in Singapore? See 2026 hourly rates by level, monthly income examples, agency commission, and tax explained. Real numbers inside.
Private tutoring in Singapore pays well for the hours involved, but the headline hourly rate is only part of the picture. What you actually bank each month depends on your level mix, how many students you carry, agency commission on new assignments, and a little tax admin. Here are the real numbers.
Hourly rates by level in 2026
| Level | Typical rate | | --- | --- | | Primary | $30 to $35 / hour | | Lower Secondary | $35 to $40 / hour | | Upper Secondary | $40 to $45 / hour | | Experienced and MOE-trained tutors | $50 to $70 / hour |
These are the bands families across Singapore are actually paying through agencies right now. Part-time tutors without teaching experience sit at the lower end of each band; full-time tutors with a track record and ex-MOE teachers sit at the top and often above it.
What that means per month
A typical assignment runs 1.5 to 2 hours, once or twice a week. Some worked examples:
- One P5 Maths student, 1.5 hours weekly at $32: about $200 a month
- Three students (two primary, one Sec 3), around 6 hours a week: roughly $850 to $950 a month
- A full-time tutor with 20 teaching hours a week at an average of $45: around $3,600 a month
- An ex-MOE teacher with 15 hours a week at $60: around $3,600 a month on fewer hours
The step from casual to serious income is mostly about student count and level mix. Upper secondary and JC assignments pay 30 to 50 percent more per hour than primary ones, which is why experienced tutors migrate upward as they build confidence. The path in is covered in our guide to becoming a home tutor in Singapore.
What agencies take, and when
Agencies charge a one-time commission per assignment they hand you, not an ongoing cut. At The Learning Zone the commission is 3 lessons or 75 percent of the first month equivalent of fees, whichever is higher, applied once per assignment. From the second month of an assignment onward, 100 percent of the fee is yours.
This matters when you compare offers: a slightly higher hourly rate through an agency with recurring deductions can pay worse than a clean one-time commission. Read the terms before you sign up anywhere.
Do tutors pay tax in Singapore?
Yes. Tutoring income is taxable and should be declared to IRAS as part of your annual income, whether tutoring is your side income or your full-time work. Keep a simple record of assignments and payments received; that makes filing straightforward. Whether much tax is actually payable depends on your total income and reliefs, and many part-time student tutors fall below the taxable threshold.
How to earn at the top of your band
1. Teach the levels you command, not just the ones you get offered. Moving one student from primary to upper secondary raises your effective rate by a third. 2. Collect results and reviews. A tutor who can say "my last student went from C5 to A2" quotes with confidence. 3. Stay responsive. Agencies route assignments to tutors who reply fast, so the busiest tutors are usually the most reachable ones. 4. Set your own rate. At The Learning Zone you quote the rate you want and we match you with families who accept it. Apply as a tutor here.
